Accelerated Reading:
The purpose of AR is to monitor progress and promote guided independent reading practice. Its main goal is to improve reading comprehension.
- All grades from 1st through 6th are REQUIRED to participate in AR.
- AR will NOT count as part of any reading grade.
- The STAR test will be administered at the beginning of the school year and again in January at the beginning of the 3rd Quarter.
- All teachers will follow the standardized guidelines for setting goals.
- The STAR test is NOT the sole determining factor for setting the book level goal. Teachers may also use reading scores out of the report cards from previous years, as well as current classroom performance, to help determine more accurate goals for each student.
- Mrs. Bass will receive copies of the diagnostic reports every week for ALL grades. From these reports, she will be able to monitor the progress of every child.
- Each student will know his/her reading range and will read within that range.
- Reading Practice quizzes are added every week. If a book is not "AR" one week, it could very well be an "AR" book next week.
- We are giving words of caution about books that may be "adaptations", "abridged" and "unabridged". Abridged and Unabridged may be two different AR tests, and adaptations may not conform to the AR quiz, and you child may not perform well on that particular quiz.
- Students will utilize reading logs in class to keep track of books read, book levels, and performance scores on each quiz.
- AR quizzes may ONLY be taken at school with a teacher's supervision. They may not be taken at home.
The student must meet all three AR goals to be eligible for quarterly prizes. These goals are:
- Point Goal
- Book Level Goal
- Average Percent Correct Goal
The AR Board in the hallway outside the PE room tracks students' progress into point clubs. The first point club is the 25 Point Club, and each club after that increases by 25 until the final club of 175+. As a student reaches a new club level, their picture will be placed on the board in the appropriate club. Again, to find a place in one of the clubs, ALL THREE goals must be met.
Every quarter, each classroom will have a top reader. This honor takes into account the amount of points accumulated as well as the average percent correct achieved. Book level must also be met to be a top reader.
At the end of the school year, there will be a top reader of the school, and this student is awarded a special prize. A child in ANY grade can be the top reader. Again, ALL THREE goals must be met to receive the honor of "Top Reader of the School".
You will receive a letter with instructions on how to sign up for Home Connect. This letter will contain the web address, as well as your username and password, which will give you the ability to view your child's progress in AR. You will also have the ability to look up books using the Bookfinder feature of the Home Connect website. This will enable you to look up the book level of a particular book, and it is a wonderful tool to use. You child can also utilize the public library as well as the school library to check out books. As long as the book is an AR book and on your child's level, he/she is welcome to read and test on that book. This is where the Bookfinder can be a valuable asset to use.
If you have questions concerning AR, please feel free to ask your child's teacher or Ms. Harvey. Communication is our best ally. When we work together, everyone benefits, especially the student, and that is why we are all here.
Thank You.
